b. 1977
I get out of bed in the morning inspired by the uninhibited graphic prints of Fritz Scholder, and I cannot sleep at night reflecting upon Egon Schiele’s simple line drawings. Something about capturing the raw essence of subject, the confidence in technique, and the finding of ones voice, inspires me to climb forward in my own work. True artists have no choice in the matter, they must create and they must push limits.
Everyone feels a tie to animals. Maybe it is their innocence, or their perfect beauty, their intelligence or instincts, but they are loved, identified with, and respected. Over the years I have learned to speak through them. With a twist of the brush I can convey wisdom, character, humor, bravery, or nobility and articulate my very own language through paint.
Jackson Hole taught me about beauty and silence. I learned to listen, to watch, to study and to admire the animals of the valley. The west will always be my home. The endless starry skies prove to me that creativity has no end, and the Teton Mountains keep me humbled.
Time spent in my second favorite place, Austin, Texas has coached me on how to feed on energy and diversity. It is a place where becoming one’s true self is encouraged and celebrated. The dynamic enthusiasm of the town allows me the option to transport my animals to the city and broaden my scope of influence. Nature is sought out by all. We need it to feel the peace and grace in our lives for which we are all searching. I have begun to wander through my own genre of art identifying with all animal lovers. Consequently, Urban Wildlife Art has been born.
With the art world watching I am injecting a fresh electric vitality to western icons in the only way I know how, using a style that is singularly my own. When asked how I go about creating the colors or the gestural line drawings, I cannot explain it in words. I just understand this language. Similar to jamming on an instrument, I just know what notes to play.
This is my God given gift, and I do not take it lightly. It is my duty to use it for good and give back whatever I can. As a result my life has been so incredibly blessed. I hope my work inspires you to fight for your own dreams. Dreams are hard. They take everything you’ve got, and they don’t come without hardships, but yes, they really do come true.
You can find my work at Altamira Fine Art in Jackson, WY, Beals and Abbate Fine Art in Santa Fe, NM, Gallery Mar in Park City, UT, and the Walt Horton Gallery in Beavercreek, CO, or at www.amyringholz.com.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Passionate drawings of sensual black ink lines make up the foundation upon which Amy Ringholz adds saturated colors, texture, intrigue and emotion to her wildlife images. Her paintings appeal to a wide array of art enthusiasts. She uses the animal’s eyes to show the soul of the painting. These eyes convey mystery or daring, humor or mischievousness, and sometimes a warm, gracious and loving heart. Amy and her characters are kindred spirits happy to explore, to evolve, to excite, to engage and to enliven whomever they touch.
